While in terms of summer dresses 2016 was all about the slip dress, this year the wrap dress is THE latest piece to have. Instagram feeds are already full of them, it seems that every fashionable girl has a bunch of these in reserve. The reasons to immediately get one are obvious: it is beautiful and chic, feminine and romantic, and so french! Jeanne Damas, the Parisienne du jour and role model for french chic par excellence, was one of the first that understood the (trend) potential and made it the No. 1 must-have amongst all summer dresses. The collection of her own clothing line, Rouje, includes some très mignon examples.
The wrap dress per se is not a reinvention. Diane von Fürstenberg presented what is today commonly known as wrap dress in 1973 and it’s been in fashion since then. It’s typical style includes jersey material, a graphical or floral pattern, knee length and of course that broad wrapping strap to be tied on the side.
The 2017 summer dresses are not competing with this classic at all, as there are main style differences: the length is rather short, almost mini (though there are some longer versions), patterns are very diverse – from stars over fruits to dotted versions, the material is more airy and light and lastly the strap is more of a lace that is tied in the back or in the front.
