In fashion, there are certain items that never go out of style – nope, not trying to quote Taylor Swift here. A (little) black dress, a nice pair of jeans, a white blouse, a simple T-shirt of good quality, a leather jacket – these pieces are timeless and have already been around for decades, slightly adjusted to the zeitgeist of course, Another garment that belongs to the list is definitely a striped shirt. The Breton shirt was originally the uniform of French navy seamen, and just these inspired the great Coco Chanel to incorporate the striped design into fashion – a new trend was born. Since 1917, both men and women can’t get enough of the French nautical style, and I’m sure you’ll agree with me that you can never go wrong with a Breton shirt, am I right? Whether you pair it with a pleated skirt – short or long, culottes, leather leggings or boyfriend jeans, it always works. Always.
I got this oversized striped top with super long sleeves from Zara and paired it with skinny ankle jeans in grey and a black, long trenchcoat. For a modified marine feeling, I also opted for a Levi’s bandana knotted in the front. Besides timeless pieces, there are also items that are super hyped, then completely disappear off the radar, just to become fashionable again. The Adidas Superstar definitely are such fashion items. I remember I had a white and silver pair when I was still in school, and even if I wanted to stray from getting another pair last year, just because everyone else had them, I gave in and got the classic ones with black stripes.
After all, just because everyone else might be wearing a certain piece of clothing or pair of shoes is not a reason to pass on that item, if you still like it. Just try to make it your own by styling it your way!
