Gone are the days you could only get attention solely based off of your looks. This year Pirelli’s 2016 calendar is honoring women for accomplishments in their field. Typically this Italian manufacturer is known for their soft-core semi-pornographic shoots with scantily clad models. This move to a more intellectually stimulating and inspiring calendar is a huge step up for them.
That’s not to say it has lost its sex appeal, it is just no longer the only focus of the piece. Shot by award winning photographer, Annie Leibovitz, brought her own vision to the work saying, “I started to think about the roles that women play, women who have achieved something. I wanted to make a classic set of portraits. I thought that the women should look strong but natural, and I decided to keep it a very simple exercise of shooting in the studio. This calendar is so completely different. It is a departure. The idea was not to have any pretense in these pictures and be very straightforward.”
